"When Anita Loos composed those words she had never seen some of the diamonds coming through Gemcut Diamond Co., 15W 47 St., New York, which specializes in recutting diamonds and colored stones.
Pear shapes can lose their shape when they get a solid knock. Rounds can get large chips in their girdles, and others, like "old miners," can have shapes that simply go out of style.
"You'd be surprised at how much damage can happen to something as hard as a diamond," says Shlomo Gottlieb, of Gemcut. "But even more surprising to the public and many retailers is that much of the damage can be repaired by recutting or refaceting—for a reasonable cost. It's not just for world class gems."
"...Pear shaped stones with badly broken points can be recut into rounds, a badly broken marquise into a pear shaped, or a round brilliant with a badly chipped crown into a heart-shaped stone.
"While these transformations sound drastic, Gottlieb says they can generally be accomplished with minimal weight loss.
Another part of Gemcut's business—a big part—is redoing old mine cuts or poorly cut stones.
"Old miners and emerald cuts can be recut with relatively little weight loss," he says noting the much flashier radiant cuts have been rapidly sup-planting the traditional emerald cut.
" ...Recutting an old miner can boost its value 50% to 100%. Badly chipped diamonds can appreciate even more after recutting.
"Jewelers must take some precautions during the take-in procedure for recutting diamonds, as with any other service. Check all stones during take-in. Stones which have been cracked generally cannot be recut.
"...We advise the jeweler on each stone whether it's advisable to sacrifice weight for quality, or whether or not to reshape the stone. But the jeweler makes the final decision because he knows best what his needs are," says Gottlieb.
Jewelers can build business by advertising these services and even staging special promotions at various times of the year.
